Long-term project: Sanjeevi Health Center
Ford India – MCRT 94 Sanjeevi Primary Health Care Center was a joint venture between Ford India and the Table. Its primary objective is to serve the neighboring villages surrounding Maraimalai Nagar, in the areas of health, hygiene, environment and education. Both Ford and MCRT 94 manage and run the center through a trust called Mahindra Ford India- MCRT94 trust. This trust comprises of 4 individuals from the Ford organization and 4 tablers from the table. Part of the funds raised by the table goes to running of the center, which is also financially supported by Ford. The cost of running the center is about 10 lakhs a year.
The center was established on March 5th 1999 and since that time has over 2, 04,000 patients have benefited from the health services rendered at the center. It has a team of dedicated staff led by Dr. Achutha Rao. It has on staff two doctors, a staff nurse, a male nursing attendant and a village health worker. Though the primary focus is to deliver quality primary health care, due importance is given to hygiene, environment and education.
On an average over a 100 patients are given free consultations, medicines and are treated at the center for all different kinds of ailments everyday. Apart from this, specialty doctors are invited to the center to conduct specialized camps such as Diabetic screening, TB screening, dental and ophthalmologic check ups etc. are organized periodically.
Sanjeevi plays a vital role in primary trauma care. As it is located in one of the main National Highways that leads to Chennai city, critical primary care is often offered to a number of road accident victims. Serious cases are given first aid and then transported to the General hospital for further care. The ambulance donated by Ford plays a very vital role in reaching critical cases to the nearby Govt. Hospital.
The center is very actively involved in the community as well and the following projects are undertaken by the center:
Periodic medical check-ups are done at the neighboring village schools. Vitamins and anti-worm medicines are also given.
The center with the help of some volunteers runs an after school program at some of the village schools.
Libraries have been set up in some of the schools and first aid boxes have also been given
In conjunction with the TB Centre, Kancheepuram and Chenglpet, WE CARE and HOPE foundation and other NGOs an awareness programs on HIV and diabetes are conducted on a regular basis in the villages by staff of the centre.
In conjunction with the Rotary School of Nursing, a charitable venture of the Rotary Club of Madras Southwest, Sanjeevi is running a rural health training program for the nursing students of the school.
